Uig School

Uig School in Timsgarry has a roll of 26 and serves all the villages of West Uig, replacing the earlier public schools at Brenish, Mangersta, Crowlista, Valtos and Lochcroistean.  The school makes good use of our museum and explores aspects of local (and wider) history, and we’re very pleased to show some of their activities here. There are more pictures of school activities (and old school pictures) in the Gallery.

Blackhouses (P4-P7, Autumn 2008)

As part of a unit on the Victorians, the P4-P7 class studied blackhouses, in which the vast majority of Western Islanders lived during the 19th century.   The children were intrigued to find out about life in a blackhouse, and invited Finlay Maciver, who (though not a Victorian!) was born in a blackhouse at 4 Geshader in 1930, to tell them about his early life.  They gathered in the museum blackhouse reconstruction and each thought of a question to ask, about school, chores and other aspects of daily life.  Finlay kept them entertained for over an hour and gave them a vivid picture of a child’s life in Uig 70 years ago.  Click for a slideshow of the visit.

With Finlay in Uig

The school also visited the blackhouse museum in Arnol and the blackhouse village at Garenin.  Click for another slideshow of the day out; and there are more pictures of the Victorian days in the Gallery.  Here’s some of the work the children produced.

Vikings! (P1-P3, Autumn 2008)

The younger children have been studying their Viking heritage.  They’ve taken part in active learning in the Viking ’short-house’ in the museum, including drama, role play, dressing up and handling of some of the replica Viking objects:  the loom, textiles, domestic objects, games, armour and weapons.  Afterwards they produced paintings and drawings and written work, and a talking book is coming soon.
