Please can you tell me if Barabel is a common name, my mother had a cousin Barabel Macleod other than that I had never heard the name before. I must say I like it.
Barabal (correct spelling in Gaelic) is one of those Gaelic names for which there is not a direct English equivalent (in the way that (Gaelic) ‘Iain’ equals (English) John. By -convention- it is normally represented as Annabella in English, but is sometimes given as Barbara in the historical records. A Barbara would be called Barbara in Gaelic, though it is not a traditional Gaelic name, so you have to be careful when interpreting the records to work out whether the person recorded as Barbara is actually a Barbara or a Barabal (Annabella)!
My mother had a cousin called Ishbel as well as cousin Barabel these names fascinate me, they sound very special.
The parents of these two cousins were Rev. Donald And Kate Macleod from Stornoway does anyone have knowledge of any of their decsendants>.

It was fairly common in the past – sometimes interchangeable (according to the census takers anyway) with Barbara or Annabelle. I like it too.
